    Laws - View Law: TRUANCY

(not being in school when you are supposed to be)

It is against the law for anyone between the ages of six and sixteen to not attend school. However, there are some exceptions through excused absences, home school, etc. Even if you miss just one class period without an excuse, you are considered truant.

If you miss school a lot (5 days, unexcused) you are considered to be habitually truant (ARS 15-803).  An attendance officer can enforce this law. The officer can give you a ticket requiring you and a parent to appear before an official of the court. (ARS 15-805)  If you are habitually truant you could be put on probation, have your driver’s license taken away, or have to attend counseling or educational classes. (ARS 8-323)

I can't argue that going to school is a bad thing, but it also has to be a choice. Perspective must be placed on matters to say that, "hey, how can something be wrong which was right at one time?" When people think about it, what choice is left in our society. If kids aren't given choices, how can we break that as we get older? Imagine the world where everyone is forced to do "good" things like go to school and act a certain way. It just doesn't speak justice anymore, a word whose definition has been lost throughout time.

As a Ex-Truancy Officer for Yuma School District#1 I helped so many parent in getting there kids to school. In the 9 years I koncked on over 6,000 doors and sent over 500 to Juvenile court for truancy. I can say I did my job to the fullest. Student and parents started getting the idea that THIS GUYS IS SERIOUS. I did not give slaps on the hand for parents not sending their kids to school. The School District gave me the job and I did it 100%. Truancy works. If you had to go to court, you are the blame for that. Like I always told the parents; " if this was a job, your kids will be fired!!

I agree, this state only cares about money. But it is also our obligation to change the laws or people that are in office or have the power to carry out these non-sense actions. We as parents and citizens must say NO MORE!!!!!
