Student Expression on Campus

Event Overview

Students may have a general understanding of the First Amendment, but they may not understand how it is modified for school campus.  As students grow and begin to form their own opinions of school rules, it is necessary to teach them how to peacefully express themselves.

This academy will provide an understanding of the First Amendment and how it applies to student life.  It will examine each freedom protected in the First Amendment and correlate it to relevant school examples.  The lessons will teach students how to communicate their frustrations in a positive, effective manner.  Students will learn how to incorporate their student rights respectfully and appropriately on school campuses.  Students will also learn the value of respecting the rights of others while exercising their own freedoms.

Training Objectives:

  • Teach students to respectfully practice their 1st amendment right
  • Learn in what situations their rights protected
  • Help youth understand how the 1st amendment applies to school life

Campus Issues Addressed:

  • Lack of connection to the school community
  • Lack of civic participation
  • Lack of understanding of rights and responsibilities
