Technology as a Weapon

Overview:

Nearly 22% of youth reported having harassed or made fun of another person online or through text at least once in the past year. (AYS 2024) This training will provide youth with strategies to avoid the consequences of sexting, protect themselves from the dangers of online predators, and prevent cyberbullying. Students will also explore emerging technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), and develop an understanding of responsible and ethical digital citizenship. In addition, students will be educated on the consequences of cybercrimes, how to report if targeted, and steps to take to enable privacy and security settings on their electronic devices that have access to the internet.

School Safety Program funded officers are welcome to attend, but this training will not fulfill their yearly training requirement.

Academy Objectives:

• Educate students on their rights and responsibilities with online communications
• Educate youth on the consequences to themselves and others when posting or responding to bullying posts
• Help students learn the importance of gathering more information before reacting online 
• Inform youth of the legal consequences of their words and actions
