Safety Starts Before the Bell

Overview:

A recent study by Zen Drive found that Arizona ranks near the bottom when it comes to school zone safety. “Fifty-seven million kids walk, bike, take the bus or get a ride to school every day in the U.S. It’s a necessary journey, and sometimes it can be dangerous.” This training will provide participants with the necessary tools for working with middle school students that will help them navigate their real-life situations. The lesson plans provided will focus on arriving at school and home safely in various transportation modes appropriate for this age group. Students will practice following pedestrians, bike signs, identifying safe crossing techniques, and being responsible for passengers.  

School Safety Program funded officers are welcome to attend, but this training will not fulfill their yearly training requirement.

Academy Objectives:

• Help youth recognize school zone laws, traffic signs, pedestrian crossings, and bicycle safety rules 
• Educate students on the consequences of unsafe situations
• Help students identify safe decision-making in transportation situations
• Provide opportunities for students to practice how to travel safely

Campus Issues Addressed:

• Student injury before or after school
• Lack of recognizing cross signs for pedestrians and bicyclists 
• Need for choosing safe actions when going to or from school 
• Lack of understanding laws and road rules for e-bikes and scooters
