What do DEA Agents do? 

A Drug Enforcement Administration agent (also known as a DEA agent) is a federal law enforcement officer who focuses on stopping illegal drug activity. DEA agents investigate people who make, sell, or transport illegal drugs. They might also collaborate with other enforcement agencies, and sometimes partner with other countries, to stop large drug operations. Their goal is to reduce illegal drug activity and protect public safety.  

What does a typical day look like in this job? 

On a typical day, a DEA agent might gather and analyze evidence to help build a legal case against people or organizations that violate U.S. drug-related laws. They may conduct surveillance, interview witnesses, or assist with search warrants. They might arrest individuals involved in illegal drug trade and seize illegal drugs, money, or property connected to crimes. They may also share information with international partners or work with state and local law enforcement agencies. 

What skills or abilities are important for this job? 

DEA agents must have excellent teamwork and relationship skills because they often work closely with other agents, police departments, and international partners. They need effective written and verbal communication as well as great attention to detail, so they can clearly explain evidence in reports and in court. They must be flexible and solve problems quickly and effectively while also demonstrating integrity and honesty since their decisions can affect investigations and people’s lives. Physical fitness, sound judgment, and the ability to stay calm in high-pressure situations are also important because the job can involve dangerous or stressful conditions.  

What kind of education, certification, or training is required? 

To become a DEA agent, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. While specific majors are not required, degrees in criminal justice, law, or science may be helpful. Candidates should have excellent physical and mental health and must be at least 21 years old. They must also have U.S. Citizenship and be able to successfully pass a background, polygraph, and drug test. They must be able to get and keep a Top Secret (TS) security clearance - which requires government body sponsorship, additional interviews, and a more comprehensive background check covering at least the last ten years.  

What is challenging about this job? 

One of the most challenging parts of being a DEA agent is the risk. DEA agents are involved in cases involving organized crime and drug trafficking networks, which can be dangerous. This risk can exist both during investigations and when making arrests. Another challenge is the pressure. DEA agents often work on complex cases that may affect many people and communities. They must make careful decisions while working in high-stress situations.
