What do medical examiners do?

Medical examiners investigate suspicious, unexplained, or sudden deaths. They perform autopsies to determine how someone died and find the cause of their death. They are also responsible for identifying the deceased. Medical examiners typically perform these tasks within assigned jurisdictions or areas.   

What does a typical day look like in this job? 

On a typical day, a medical examiner might be called out to a scene to gather information and assess the circumstances of a death. They might confirm death, assist in identifying the body, or sign a death certificate. A medical examiner may also perform an autopsy to investigate how and why someone died. They may provide medical opinions and testify as expert witnesses in court.  

What skills or abilities are important for this job? 

Medical examiners must have excellent analytical abilities to accurately interpret medical findings. Having a thorough knowledge of anatomy and forensic science is foundational to the profession. They must also be able to clearly communicate their findings to others. Medical examiners must also have the ability to cope with difficult and sensitive situations, as their work often involves exposure to traumatic cases.  

What kind of education, certification, or training is required?

Medical examiners are required to complete their undergraduate education – usually in a science field such as pre-med or forensics – before graduating from medical school. After earning a medical degree, they must obtain a medical license in Arizona by passing the required licensing exams. Typically, medical examiners must complete a residency in pathology and a fellowship after medical school.  Board certification in anatomic pathology or forensic pathology is often required to be eligible for medical examiner jobs in Arizona.  

What is the most challenging part about this job? 

One of the most challenging parts of being a medical examiner is emotional strain. Medical examiners are regularly exposed to traumatic and sensitive information, including sudden or violent death, which can create significant stress and impact both their personal and professional lives. This may contribute to physical or mental health concerns. Another challenge is burnout. Under high pressure from others to accurately and objectively examine bodies, medical examiners may feel exhausted and less motivated to work.
