What does a probation officer do?

A probation officer supervises and meets with people who are on probation. People on probation, or probationers, have been found guilty of committing a crime but are allowed to remain in their community under conditions set by a court. The probation officer’s job is to make sure that probationers follow the court’s rules while also helping them complete programs or treatment required by the court. Probation officers help probationers build problem-solving skills through techniques like motivational interviewing and connect them with resources to help them successfully complete probation. 

What does a typical day look like in this job?

Probation officers have many responsibilities, and their activities can vary from day to day. Probation officers may visit the homes or jobs of probationers and conduct tests such as drug or alcohol tests to make sure that they are following the court’s orders. They can coach probationers on life skills and refer them to community resources to help reduce future criminal behavior and/or complete probation requirements. 
 
Probation officers also prepare recommendations and reports for the court. These reports can include updates about a probationer’s progress, violations of probation, and sentencing recommendations. In some cases, probation officers may also be asked to testify in court.

What skills or abilities are important for this job? 

It is important for probation officers to be good at working with many different people. This is because probation officers must be able to build relationships with the people they work with. They also need to have good organization and time management skills because they supervise many probationers at once. 
 
Probation officers should have knowledge about the criminal justice system and community resources. They need to have good critical thinking skills so that they can analyze situations and decide what to do. Strong communication skills and the ability to set clear boundaries are also important, since probation officers must balance support with accountability.

What kind of education, certification, or training is required? 

Most employers require probation officers to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. While most places do not require probation officers to have a specific degree, degrees in fields like criminal justice, behavioral science, or social science may be helpful. Some employers may also require previous experience associated with case work, social services, or investigative work. 
 
Additionally, probation officers in Arizona are required to complete the Probation Officer Certification Academy within one year of being hired. The academy includes instruction on laws, supervision techniques, report writing, and officer safety. Probation officers may also have to complete specialty training, such as how to protect yourself in dangerous situations or firearms training. Some probation officers in Arizona are armed, depending on their assignment.
