Upon arrival, juveniles are transitioned from police custody to the care of the juvenile detention center. The center's staff assume responsibility for their health and safety, and youth are expected to adhere to established rules. When staff are ready, youth can call a parent, guardian, or legal counsel upon entry to the facility.
Upon entering the juvenile detention center, youth go through an intake process to ensure their safety and well-being. Staff collect basic information, including residence and guardianship details. Medical, mental health, and suicide screenings are conducted to assess immediate needs, along with evaluations for signs of trafficking or abuse.
Upon arrival, a youth’s personal belongings are securely stored. Small valuable items are placed in a locked box, while clothing is kept in designated cubbies in the intake area. If an item is of significant value, staff will attempt to release it to the youth’s legal guardian for safekeeping.
