Units
Youth in the Center are housed in units, with each unit typically holding 10 to 11 youth and a maximum capacity of up to 16. Upon arrival, youth begin in an intake unit for approximately three days before being assigned to a general population unit based on gender and available space, though younger boys may occasionally be placed in a female unit when appropriate.
Schedule
A typical day begins around 6:05 a.m. with room cleaning, followed by breakfast at 6:30 a.m. or 7:00 a.m.. Youth have leisure time from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., where they can write letters, play cards, or relax. School starts at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and more class time until 2:30 p.m. Depending on the season, gym or recreational time is scheduled in the morning or afternoon, often from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Afterward, youth have time for showers and hygiene before dinner around 5:40 p.m.. The evening includes chores like cleaning or laundry, visits, and scheduled programming. Lights out is typically at 8:00 p.m.
Meals
Youth receive three meals and three snacks each day, with fruit available throughout the day. Meals are eaten in the unit with clear rules: youth must remain seated, avoid sharing or trading food, and keep conversations appropriate. Talking about charges is not allowed. After meals, staff collect and count utensils to ensure safety.
Communication
Youth are allowed to write letters home every day during their designated leisure time. Phone calls are typically arranged through their probation team, with most youth receiving one to two calls per week, as well as one virtual call. Youth can also earn “Character Cash” through positive behavior, which may be used to purchase additional phone calls. All communication must be made to contacts on an approved list determined by their probation team.
