Bullying Prevention Academy

(Middle/High School)

Participant Agenda 

 

Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will… 

•Educate youth on the laws and rules that exist to protect their academic experience

•Teach students strategies to address bullying behavior in appropriate ways

•Provide opportunities for students to empower students to become an upstander

8:30-9:00 AM Check-In

Participants will sign-in and enjoy a continental breakfast. 

9:00 AM          Welcome, Introductions, & Housekeeping

 Introduction of academy faculty and staff. Overview of academy objectives and housekeeping.

Academy Expectations

Participants will discuss expectations for the academy.      

Icebreaker 

 Participants will get to know their peers.

Lesson 1 When is it Bullying

 Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses the differences between bullying and conflict.

Break

Lesson 2 Cyberbullying via Social Media

Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses how bullying can happen over social media.

Lesson 3 The Effects of Cyberbullying

Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses how cyberbullying can impact the Emotional/Mental Health, School, Physical, social wellbeing of students.

Lunch

What Do You Think? Poll Question

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the interactive poll question tool on LawForKids.org.

Lesson 4 Identifying Physical Bullying

Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses how to identify physical bullying and legal consequences.

Lesson 5 When is it Bullying by Social Aggression

Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses how relational bullying can hurt a person’s social wellbeing.

Break

Lesson 6 When is it Time to Stand Up for Others and When is it Not?

Participants will engage in a lesson demonstration that discusses what it means to be a bystander and how students can prevent and intervene in bullying situations.

Wrap Up          

            Participants will review the training expectations and submit evaluations.

Jessica Harris is an Instruction Specialist at the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education. She works with School Safety Program school resource officers, school probation officers, and teachers on the effective implementation of law-related education through training and support. Jessica has 6 years of classroom experience.  Before her position at the Foundation, she taught social studies in grades 6th through 12th in Alabama, Atlanta, and Peoria School District. Jessica has received B.S. in History from the University of South Alabama, MA Ed in secondary social sciences, and her Ed. D from the University of Miami. She enjoys spending her free time with her family. 

 

Valerie Rhodes

School Resource Officer

Phoenix Police Department

Valerie Rhodes has been an Officer with the Phoenix Police Department for the past fifteen years. Officer Rhodes has served in many areas within on Department, the Domestic Violence Unit, Adult Sex Crimes Unit, Assaults Unit, and Patrol. The 2022-2023 school year was her first year as a School Resource Officer at Barry Goldwater High School.  Being part of the team at Barry Goldwater High School has been a blessing and has allowed Officer Rhodes opportunities to join her previous career as a high school teacher and administrator with being an Officer and using her skills to build relationships with the student, faculty, and staff.  Officer Rhodes holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Music Education from Arizona State University as well as a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix. In her free time, she has a therapy dog, Beau, who loves to visit the students at school as well as many other facilities and put smiles on people’s faces.

 

Diana Strouth

Senior Instruction Specialist

Diana Lee Strouth is the Senior Instruction Specialist at the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education. She works with School Safety Program school resource officers, school probation officers, and teachers on the effective implementation of law-related education through training, onsite technical assistance, and support. Diana has 20 years of experience in the classroom. Just prior to her position at the Foundation she taught 7th/8th grade Social Studies in the Peoria School District. Diana received her BA Ed from the University of Arizona. She is also currently a Teacher Consultant for the Arizona Geographic Alliance and board member on the Arizona Council for the Social Studies.
