Camp O'Connor Application Essay
By: Shalae Clemens
Extracurricular Activities
Currently, I am in volleyball, NJHS, Theater, Piano lessons, Rubik’s Cube Club, Origami in Lights Club, and Girls on the Run.
For the first semester of school, I had an amazing class called Math Explorations. In this class, we learned about the platonic solids and origami. We then combined the two, making origami octahedrons and icosahedrons. We then had the idea to make the origami octahedrons out of some clear transparency film sheets.a We put lights inside of them and they looked amazing! As a fundraiser for my school, we sold the “Origami in Light” at an event at my school and made about $200. We decided to sell the origami at the upcoming Southwest Makers Fest to raise money for a fieldtrip that all of the kids in Math Explorations get to go on. Since some people (like me) are not in Math Explorations anymore, we started an afterschool origami club so that we can all work on the origami and that is the club that I am in.
I have been playing volleyball for three years and have loved it. A lot of the things that we have worked on in volleyball have had to do with teamwork skills. For example, one of the drills that we do is practicing covering behind each other. Another drill that we do is bumping, setting, and spiking, so that we can work all together better as a team.
I have recently joined the National Juniors Honor Society which requires a high GPA, a demonstration of leadership skills, and a want to help your community. I have also been playing the piano for many years.
I do an after school club called Girls on the Run where we are taught to embrace our spirit, brain, heart, body, and social skills. At the end of the season, we all run a 5k together to celebrate our accomplishments.
As one of my electives, I do theater. In theater we have memorized and performed monologues and two persons scenes. We are currently writing our own play. I am also in Rubik’s Cube Club where we practice solving Rubik’s cube and compete in a competition at the end of the club’s season.
Why I Would Like to Participate in Camp O’Connor
One reason that I would like to participate in Camp O'Connor is so that I can become a better citizen in my community. My family volunteers often and I would like to learn how to personally contribute and do things in my community.
I have also always been a natural leader and taken charge. During my time at Camp O'Connor, I would like to expand my leadership skills and become a better leader so that I can apply those new leadership skills in my community.
I have always been interested in law and have seen Sandra Day O'Connor as a Hero and women's rights for being the first woman Justice of the Supreme Court. Those are the reasons why I would like to participate in Camp O’Connor.
Real World Application
My family and I already help out in the community a lot, but I hope to apply the knowledge that I learn during Camp O’Connor in my community by helping out even more in my community and doing it with more skill, for I will have gone to a camp keep that will have given me an education in civics.
In school, I would apply the leadership skills that I will have learned in Camp O’Connor. For example, when we do group activities, I would not only know how to take charge, but also how to do it well. I would take in everybody’s ideas, instead of just using my own.
