Pod/Unit
In the center, a pod (sometimes called a unit) is a designated housing area where a group of youth live together. Each pod includes individual cells for sleeping and privacy, as well as a shared common area. Youth are assigned to pods based on age, with groupings typically divided into ages 9-14, 14-15, 16-17, and 17 and older. Each day begins with a 6:15 a.m. wake-up, followed by breakfast, hygiene, and either school or gym time depending on the day. Lunch is served midday, with additional school sessions in the afternoon if not held in the morning. The evening includes hygiene time and showers, dinner, some leisure time, and lights out at 8:15 p.m.
Youth are generally allowed to write home at any time, subject to staff approval. Phone calls are typically permitted once a week, with the schedule varying depending on the unit the youth is housed in. Youth who reach Level 5 on the behavior system may earn the privilege of making more frequent video calls.
