Intake

When youths enter detention, they are interviewed using several screening questionnaires. These questions help determine mental state, screen for past abusive behaviors, and possible substance abuse issues that will be addressed during their stay. If they stay in custody, the juvenile is searched and required to shower while personal property is removed, bagged, and stored in a locked area. The only outside property that will remain with the youth is medically needed items, such as eyeglasses. They are then issued the Center’s uniform of underwear, socks, pants, and shirts (both long and short sleeved). They are also issued a hygiene bag that includes the basic needs, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and comb. The youth is then moved into the high security area for observation, screening, and training with the basic information regarding their time at the Center.

After intake is complete, youth are permitted to make a phone call to a legal guardian. All the youth begin their stay in general population. As they become familiar with the routine and expectations of the Center, they may, through good behavior, progress through the Level Up Program and gain more privileges. These privileges include additional ability to contact families, access to entertainment, and later bedtimes.
