Teaching the Law through Mock Trial

Teaching the Law through Mock Trial

Overview:

This academy will provide educators with a fun way to teach youth about the law and the consequences of breaking laws. Educators will be provided with lessons that inform youth about vandalism and theft while at school. The lessons will culminate in a scripted mock trial where the students will play roles that help them learn about the judicial system while also learning how vandalism and theft can impact their peers. While the scripted mock trial is pre-written, the “jury” will have to decide if the defendant is guilty or innocent. The jury will need to remember the lessons they were taught and what they learned in the scripted mock trial. The skills taught in these lessons will provide an opportunity for students to practice public speaking, writing, and critical thinking. The scripted trials will provide a starting point for conducting a case trial where students can learn the steps and roles of a courtroom geared towards issues they face on campus. A fun way to engage the elementary student in law related education!
