Franklin Phonetic School
Prescott, AZ
For the past three years Kristi Goeke, a teacher at Franklin Phonetic School in Prescott, has inspired her students to look at their community with an eye to problems they would like to help solve. She has participated in the We the People: Project Citizen program since 2015 and has taught her students about compromise, research, public policy, but more importantly that they had a voice and could make a difference. It’s not enough for her to just involve her students, but she brought other Franklin Phonetic teachers, along with her principal, to the Historic Supreme Court at the Arizona Capitol Museum where they watched her class present their problem, alternative solutions, public policy and action plan to a panel of judges and win the State Showcase. They were also honored with a gift for the most votes received on line from the public for the electronic they prepared for submission to the Showcase.
